From the article - should probably be NPOV'd and written in more encyclopedic language before being added back ... and contributions to articles shouldn't be signed. Elf-friend 08:40, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apart from being an easy spot to have a shipwreck, Dassen is a favourite destination for those Capetonians who enjoy the best crayfish in the world, with which Dassen abounds. The season is strictly controlled and inspectors prowl the harbour at Yzerfontein at great expense to the taxpayer and little benefit to the preservation of the crayfish population.--168.209.97.34 06:56, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History of Dassen Island

[edit]

Following on from a discussion at Coney Island I have come to the conclusion that Dassen Island is being referenced in a part of a 1638 travel journal written by Sir Thomas Herbert years later after his travels in 1626 called Some yeares travels into divers parts of Afrique and Asia in which it says the following:

Howbeit, we could not flie upon the wings of deſire, the wind withſtanding our haſt, wherby we let fall our Anchor (14 leagues ſhort of the bay of Soldania) and went a ſhore upon a little Ile (3 miles round) corruptly cal'd Cony Ile, from the Welsh cain-yne or white Ile, where we kil'd many Conies (or Cats rather) great and rammiſh, bad and wateriſh, commended for dainty meat by hungry Sailers, Ie junus ravo ſtomachus vulgaria temnit: It alſo ſuperabounds with Seales ... here are alſo birds cal'd Pen-gwins (white-head in Welch)...

If you look at Dassen Island on Google Maps it is roughly 14 leagues from the Saldanha Bay and roughly the same size as written above. Jakeybean (talk) 18:20, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
